your eyes look like coming home. [Kaisoo; pg; au]
twoshot.

Sometimes love decides to jump you when you're half asleep. Sometimes love decides to run to you in slow motion. Sometimes love just grows with you, on you, in you. Sometimes love just is.

Kyungsoo, aged 12. Jongin, aged 11. The two boys were the best of friends. Always running away from home (at least until suppertime) together, always deciding that homework was a waste of time, always playing tricks on the other boys their age.

‘Hey Kyungsoo!’

That was Kris. He was an older boy. Kris had Tao with him. Kyungsoo did not have Jongin with him. Kyungsoo felt lonely.

‘Where’s your boyfriend?’

‘What are you talking about?’

‘You know what I’m talking about. Where’s Jongin?’

Kris smirked at Kyungsoo, practically begging for a black eye. But he had Tao with him. Tao was one of the best wushu students in the school.

‘He’s not my boyfriend.’ Kyungsoo said evenly. Kris smirked again, closing in on Kyungsoo. ‘You spend all your free time together. I never see you with anyone else. At least, not a girl,’ he was pushing your buttons again. ‘He’s not my boyfriend.’ Kyungsoo repeated. ‘Sure looks like he is,’ Kris snorted at Kyungsoo and walked away.

‘What did Kris want?’ Jongin asked, a little winded because he’d run about 50 metres to get to Kyungsoo. Kris was too close. Kris could have hurt Kyungsoo. Jongin did not want Kris to hurt Kyungsoo.

‘Nothing,’

Kyungsoo, aged 14. Jongin, aged 13. The two of them were in Jongin’s room, packing things up for the big move. Jongin’s father got a job offer someplace far, and Jongin’s whole family was uprooting to relocate. ‘I still don’t get why you have to go,’ Kyungsoo mumbled. ‘It’s your dad who’s working, not you.’

‘I can’t not go. My mom and sisters are going. My dad is going. I have to go,’ Jongin said, as he tossed a few more clothes at his bed next to the suitcase. ‘You don’t have to go. You could stay with my family. My parents love you,’ Kyungsoo said, catching Jongin’s clothes and neatly folding them before packing them. Reluctantly.

‘I know. But my parents love me, too,’ Jongin said. He shut his wardrobe and sat on the bed with Kyungsoo, reaching for a shirt. ‘Okay,’ Kyungsoo sighed. He watched as Jongin folded the shirt messily, got frustrated, snatched the shirt away and neatly refolded and packed it.

‘Jongin, it’s time for us to go,’ Jongin’s older sister popped her head in the door. ‘I’ll be right there,’ Jongin said. He closed his suitcase and looked at Kyungsoo. ‘Mind giving me a hand?’ he asked, gesturing to his other bag. ‘Okay,’ Kyungsoo nodded. The two boys brought Jongin’s things downstairs.

Jongin’s parents put his things in the empty minivan his mother was driving. He and his sisters would go in the car his father drove. ‘I guess this is it.’ Kyungsoo said quietly, when Jongin came to stand in front of him. ‘This isn’t it. You’re my best friend,’ Jongin said cheerfully. ‘I’ll text and email you and you can come visit whenever you want. Seriously, just say the word and I’ll get my floor ready.’

Kyungsoo smiled at the younger boy. ‘Okay,’ his voice was weary. Jongin was his only real friend, and here he was, saying goodbye to him. ‘Bye, hyung,’ Jongin said, using an honorific he didn’t usually when it came to Kyungsoo. He threw his arms around Kyungsoo in a tight hug. ‘Bye, Jonginnie,’ Kyungsoo whispered in his ear. Jongin let go and got into the car. He waved. Kyungsoo waved back.

Kyungsoo was still waving goodbye twenty minutes after both vehicles disappeared from his sight.

Kyungsoo, aged 16. Jongin, newly aged 15.

‘Remember Kyungsoo, he doesn’t know you’re here. Just go hide in the kitchen until he comes home. I’ll signal you when you can come out,’ Jongin’s older sister said. Kyungsoo smiled and nodded. He went to wait in the kitchen, sitting at the small dining table Jongin’s family ate at. He fingered the small package he had in his hands. Jongin had always wanted this dance video. And Kyungsoo finally found it for him.

‘Jonginnie! You’re home. Happy birthday,’ Kyungsoo heard Jongin’s sister greet him out in the hall. ‘Oh and – well, whatever, it is your birthday after all,’ she continued. Kyungsoo was so nervous he forgot to breathe. ‘Thank you, noona,’ Jongin’s now-low voice said. ‘I have a surprise for you, Jongin. Look who’s here!’

‘Hi!’ Kyungsoo said, jumping out into the hall. Jongin’s face registered complete shock – but the good kind. Kyungsoo got a shock himself. There was a girl about Jongin’s age, a head shorter than him that he had never seen before. And she was holding his hand.

‘Kyungsoo!’ Jongin rushed forward and caught Kyungsoo in a tight hug. ‘I can’t believe you’re here!’ he exclaimed. Kyungsoo hugged him back, and found himself unable to stop the giant grin growing on his face. ‘Happy birthday, Jonginnie,’ Kyungsoo said when Jongin finally let him go. ‘Thanks!’ Jongin said. ‘Oh by the way, this is EunHee. She’s my girlfriend.’ Jongin gently pushed the unknown girl forward, and she bowed and gave Kyungsoo a formal greeting.

Kyungsoo’s heart sort of, well, hurt at the word “girlfriend”. He bowed back.

Later that night, as they were both in Jongin’s room – Kyungsoo on the floor, as always – Kyungsoo decided to give Jongin his present. ‘Wow!’ Jongin exclaimed. ‘Thanks Kyung!’ he swept Kyungsoo into another breathtaking hug. They lay back down, Jongin on his bed, Kyungsoo on his mattress.

‘So… That Eunhee girl. How long have you guys been going out?’ Kyungsoo asked tentatively. He didn’t want to know the answers, yet something in his heart told him that if he didn’t ask he’d head home with that annoying pain in him that always came after he visited Jongin and didn’t say everything he needed to say.

‘About a month or so. Listen, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you,’ Jongin’s voice got soft. ‘It’s okay, Jong. It’s your life,’ Kyungsoo said. His words felt heavier than a ton of bricks as he let them slip off his tongue. ‘She’s a great girl, you know. You guys would get along great,’ Jongin said. ‘I’m sure we would,’ Kyungsoo said, somewhat bitterly. ‘She’s great. Spending time with her is like spending time on cloud nine, you know? She makes me feel all… Warm and fuzzy inside,’ Jongin continued. Kyungsoo was silent.

Just before they drifted off to sleep, Kyungsoo heard Jongin calling his name.

‘Kyung?’
‘Yes?’
‘I think I’m in love.’

Kyungsoo’s heart stopped.

‘That’s nice.’
